Match Play

Match Play in GolfHandicapp is a team competition, your own little Cup. Two teams, Reds against Blues, with players paired into matches. The one thing that catches people out: adding players isn't enough, you then build the actual matches.

First create an event (see Creating an event), then set the Main game to Match Play. Everything below is the bit that's special to the Cup.

Build the matches

Once Match Play is the main game (or the side game), a Teams and matches section appears under your players. Tap Set up teams and matches to open it.

The Teams and matches screen, with players split into Reds and Blues and no matches built yet

  1. Name the teams. Two names sit at the top, defaulting to Reds and Blues. Tap either to rename it.
  2. Split the players into teams. Each golfer has a small A/B toggle. Tap it to drop them onto a team. Everyone starts spread across the two sides, so just adjust as needed.
  3. Build a match. Pick one player from each team for a singles match, or two from each team for a fourball. Then tap Add match. The button tells you which kind you're adding as you select.
  4. Repeat until every match you want is built. Remove one with the small cross on its row.
  5. Tap Done to go back.

Two matches built and ready, with the Done button

The step everyone misses. Adding players does not create any matches. You have to go into Teams and matches and build each one by hand. Until at least one match exists, the Start event button stays greyed out and you can't go live.

Singles versus fourball

A player can only be in one match at a time. Once you've put someone in a match, their team is locked until you remove them from it.

How it scores

Each match plays out hole by hole. The side with the lower net score wins the hole and goes one up. The running result shows who's up and through how many holes, and a match can close out early once the lead is bigger than the holes left ("3 and 2").

The Cup totals it all up live as Reds versus Blues, banking finished matches into the score and showing a projected total that counts every match by whoever's currently ahead (half each when level).

There are two competitions running at once. Alongside Match Play, the same pairings are also scored by net Stableford, so you get a Stableford tally of Reds versus Blues too. One set of matches, two ways to win.

Handicaps

The Cup uses your full handicap, with a 90% allowance applied to fourball matches per WHS. You set this with the Handicap allowance toggle when you create the event. See Creating an event for where that lives.
